o.k.now that i had a mental picture in my head, it was time for the next step.... i wiped the car down with mineral spirits and wiped
off all the flames. WTF? yes, i wanted to repaint the black before putting the flames on, so, i had to wipe it all off. i've covered
painting before so i'm not going to go over all that again here. after some minor body work, fixing scratches and minor dings etc.
i repainted the black.
i could have redrawn the flames on the new paint to use as a guide for masking, but like i said, i had a mental picture of what i
wanted the flames to look like.
first step was to use my 1/4 flexible blue plastic tape to mask the flame outline.

then i started to mask.

all the way down both sides and on the hood and fenders. once i was satisfied with the flames, i used adhesive backed masking paper
to cover over the flames.

once the flames are covered, you need a utility knife or exacto knife to cut along the blue tape outline that is visible under
 your masking paper.
peeling away the paper to expose the flame area that will be painted.

BE VERY CAREFUL TO ONLY CUT THROUGH THE TOP LAYER OF THE MASKING PAPER, OR YOU WILL PUT
SCRATCHES IN YOUR
BASE LAYER OF PAINT, LIKE I DID.
I WAS NOT VERY CAREFUL
it was a very long, tedious, time consuming process. i may have had a little too much beer to be doing fine detail work.
lots and lots of masking to do. i don't think i will ever
paint another car without buying a masking paper and tape dispenser. this would have made things alot easier. instead of using
sections of newspaper.

i reshot the roof so it would match the flames.
i'm not sure what the difference was this time. maybe it was the new paint gun i bought. i used a full quart on the top and flames
and used 3 quarts on the body. last time i only used 1 quart to do the whole body!! don't ask me.
so, 3 qts rustoleum satin black, and 1qt of rustoleum sunrise red gloss @ $8.00 per quart = anyone? anyone? thats right $32.00.
plus a gallon of acetone, i don't remember what i paid for it. not bad.
