the good thing about oil based enamel paint is that it is tough. if you want to try to freehand some flames on oil based enamel, it is easy to do because you can wipe it off and start over if you mess up.
 i used a china marker type pencil, the type with the string that you pull and unravel.
 
next you start to draw your flames.

if you mess up you can wipe it off, i used amonia and water.

above is my spray bottle and rag, i used it several times(perhaps too much schlitz prior to drawing the flames)


not too bad, if you like them, the next step would be to outline them with 1/4" flexible masking tape, mask the areas not to be painted, then spray the color of your choice. if you don't like them, wipe them off and try again. after many wipes and redraws, i finally had a rough idea of how i wanted the flames to look.
